About Us

Who is African Initiatives?
African Initiatives is a small but effective social justice organisation based in Bristol run by a dedicated team of five staff and an extensive network of volunteers. We support communities in Africa to find their own long term solutions to the problems they face. Working in long term partnerships, we strengthen the capacity of a number of grassroots organisations in Tanzania and Ghana through the provision of grants, information, resources, training, advice, mentoring for staff, monitoring and evaluation, and impact assessments.  Together we help build self-sufficiency and confidence in communities, knowledge and skills and empower people to fully participate in the decisions that affect their lives on a daily basis.  Our vision is of an equal world in which everyone has their voice heard and is empowered to claim their rights.

The projects that we support concern girls’ education, women’s rights (including domestic violence), sustainable livelihoods, health education (including HIV and AIDS), economic empowerment, land rights and youth at risk with education and community empowerment forming an integral part of all our projects overseas.

Awareness raising in the UK
To support our work in Africa, African Initiatives also promotes a better understanding of Africa here in the UK. We support positive policies and activities that reduce poverty and improve people’s lives.

African Initiatives works with the public and the media to provide resources and run workshops, conferences and other events on Africa and wider global justice and environmental issues. The organisation believes that, with this knowledge and accompanying skills, people in the UK will become advocates for bringing justice to Africa as well as other parts of the world. This includes our Global Resource Centre in Bristol which provides up-to-date information, resources and activities for the public, media, schools and youth groups.

Interested in Volunteering?
We are always happy to hear from potential new volunteers and because we are a small organisation we can often offer volunteers an opportunity to learn and contribute to the many different areas within this sector including fundraising, campaigning and Global Education.
