GLEN
The Bristol and South Gloucestershire Global Education Network (GLEN) was initially founded as part of the Department for International Development’s Enabling Effective Support Strategy (EES) which aims to support educators in delivering global education. These networks are unique in that they bring together Local Authorities, Schools, Universities, Global Service Providers and all individuals who have an interest in global education in a united purpose. Recent projects funded through the EES strategy include the Global Mapping Report which researched the provision of global education across Bristol & South Gloucestershire and the Global Education Directory-SW, currently in its final stages of development which aims to provide a comprehensive resource for schools of all Global Education Providers across the South West Region.

Global Eyes
Global Eyes is a project designed to raise awareness in young people in schools of the influence of the media over our perceptions of the world around us; how our values and beliefs are shaped and therefore how we can shape others' perceptions. Global Eyes promotes positive images of Africa and challenges students to look beyond the stereotypes through an understanding of the global issues faced in Africa, and the ways in which they are overcome, as well as how grassroots organisations, NGOs, Local Governments and communities work together to reduce poverty. The project will take place over 3 years. The learning process will include workshops run by teachers who have been trained by African Initiatives in the delivery of the Global Dimension; contact with representatives of local Diaspora community associations; global education providers; and shared learning with schools in the southern hemisphere through African Initiatives partners overseas. Regional events at the culmination of each year of the project will enable students from across the region to participate in workshops, question representatives on a panel and present their “Global Eyes” to their peers. Case studies and best practice will be disseminated to schools at the end of each year.
The main aim of the project is to challenge the perceptions of the developing world in students of the Bristol and Bath area and promote positive images of Africa. Global Eyes explores the role the media plays in influencing perceptions and forming values and beliefs through considering how the media portrays global events, issues and the efforts of African countries to find solutions. This connects two priority areas in DFIDs ‘Building Support for Development Strategy Paper’- formal education and the media. This project aims to “promote more effective and widespread teaching of development issues” as well as critically assessing and evaluating the way in which the Media presents development issues and their influence on students and wider society.
