Christmas Appeal 2017

Give a Girl the Gift of a Healthier & Happier Future this Christmas

The giving season is upon us and once again we have the opportunity to have our donations amplified during our annual Big Give campaign. This year is African Initiatives’ 20th anniversary and the theme for this year’s Christmas Challenge is a very important one…health.

Health is at the centre of sustainable development. Tanzania remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Maasai and other pastoralist girls and boys in the remote north of Tanzania have a desperate need for information about life changing issues such as HIV/AIDs and female genital mutilation (FGM).

African Initiatives is working with local grassroots partners in Tanzania to establish health clubs in Primary and Secondary schools… but what do these health clubs do?

Meet 13-year old Queen. Thanks to a health club we helped to set up, Queen and her fellow pupils have learned the facts about HIV and AIDs in remote communities in Tanzania where sex is a taboo subject, surrounded by many dangerous myths.

“In the health club I found out that it is wrong to believe that sleeping with a virgin will cure you of AIDS. I also learned that female genital mutilation could lead to severe bleeding and death. I did not know that before. In the club we also talked about the Maasai tradition of marrying a young girl to an old man in exchange for cows. I now understand that forced marriage takes away my rights as a girl. I have a right to an education. I have a right to health.”

Queen has also learned about the importance of hygiene…simple things like washing hands or using the toilet properly which can keep easily preventable diseases such as cholera at bay. Knowledge is power, it may seem obvious but by giving the gift of health you are directly fueling prosperity in Tanzania…

Our Big Give Christmas Challenge is to raise £18,000. This appeal is live from midday on Tuesday 28th November until midday on Tuesday 5th December. If you donate during these 7 days your donation will be matched pound for pound, which means your generosity will be doubled

With your help we can set up health clubs in 70 schools to engage 3,000 pupils and provide training for teachers in child protection. Here’s an idea of how your money will help:

£12 would pay for a health club training manual for teachers

£46 would help set up a new health club in a school and support training of student peer educators

£100 would pay for a half-day training workshop for 20 teachers on child protection, gender-based violence & child rights

Donate here and give other girls like Queen the gift of a healthier and happier future this Christmas
